A few years ago, I had the opportunity to do a couple of days diving around Hong Kong. Although it isn't a place one would normally consider as a dive destination Hong Kong does offer some interesting diving. Situated at 22 north latitude the waters are warm enough to support some coral growth. However, Hong Kong is situated on the eastern side of the huge Pearl River Delta and the local waters are normally quite turbid. As one might also suspect, these waters are very heavily fished. On the positive side, there are surprisingly few divers about and you'll find quite a number of unusual creatures you won't have seen on reefs elsewhere. If you like muck diving and finding animals you haven't seen before, diving here is well worth the effort.

During my visit I dived two quite different areas. The first was several sites around Dangan Dao Island, about 20 km offshore to the south. Steep rocky slopes and large boulders dominate the underwater landscape. Coral growth is small and sparse. Even in calm weather surge is noticeable and judging from the rounded shape of the boulders of all sizes. It must be massive in stormy weather. The marine life is a mixture of coral reef and continental species. The visibility on the day visited was in the 25 to 40 feet range. I was told that oceanic water often comes in here and visibility can sometimes be over 100 feet.

The secondary, I visited was one of the small days on the coast, about 10 km east of Hong Kong. Here the visibility was about 25 to 30 feet, and there was a surprisingly luxuriant growth of coral in fringing reefs along the shores. Although the coral was abundant only a few species were involved.

Running along the coast of Hong Kong Island itself. I noted an incredible amount of trash washed up on the shore. This is in marked contrast to the shores around Singapore, which are virtually spotless. Hong Kong harbor officials might find that a fact-finding visit with their counterparts in Singapore most useful in this respect.
